Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the grounds and procedures for the dissolution
of marriage in Chinese law during the late imperial period and in contemporary times. Material and methods: The study is based on Chinese legal scholarship, monographs and
works devoted to traditional Chinese law, as well as normative texts (statutes) and the case
law of the courts of the People’s Republic of China. The historical-legal, formal-dogmatic
and comparative methods were applied. Results: The analysis has led to the conclusion that the grounds and procedures for divorce
in late imperial law differed significantly from contemporary solutions. The rights and
interests protected by law were also distinct. Conclusions: The analysis has led to the conclusion that the grounds and procedures for
