Childcare and school facilities more often pay attention to the functioning of people with different kinds of
self-assessment. Scientists suggest multifaceted interacting. Simultaneously media are creating the image of beautiful, successful and rich people. The distance between media image and realistic one can lead to breaking of the mood. It has been
noticed that frequent experiencing of depressive states contributes to personal and educational failures. This is a research
article and consists of three parts: theoretical, methodological and empirical. The key notions of self-assessment and depression have been analyzed. Then the organization and course of studies have been described, research groups have been
characterized and research tools have been presented: W. Fitts’ “Self-esteem Scale” and Depression Scale CESD. Empirical
part focuses on attempts to answer on the basis of research analysis the question posing a main research problem: What
self-esteem and level of depression characterize students of pedagogical faculties in comparison to students of non-pedagogical ones? For this purpose research groups have been compared in terms of results got in respective subscales defining
self-esteem and level of depression evaluated in four categories.
