Abstract: Civilization changes, the development of digital technologies, changes in the labor market significantly affect modern education. In higher education in Poland, as well as in the world, the spreading phenomenon of drop-out, understood as the abandonment of the chosen field of study by a student, has been noticed for several years. The purpose of this research was to identify the reasons for drop-outs and a general overview of the unified educational paths of students at the John Paul II University in Biała Podlaska. The article is empirical in nature. Material and methods: The study used a diagnostic survey with an author’s survey questionnaire. The survey was conducted in October and November 2024. A total of 308 people who resigned from the John Paul II University in Biała Podlaska in 2019/20, 2020/21, 2021/22, 2022/23, 2023/24 were surveyed. A quota selection of the study group was made. Results: The study shows that the most common reasons for resignation from studies were difficulties in reconciling studies with professional work, changing the field of study or university, and changes in life plans. The reasons for dropping out depended on the year and mode of study of the student who made the decision to drop out. Gender and the form of study pursued by the student had no effect on the reasons for dropping out. Conclusions: On the basis of the presented research, it is necessary to indicate the necessity of a flexible approach of universities to the needs of the modern student. The analysis carried out can provide a basis for further research in this area.
