ABSTRACT
Abstract: The aim of this article was to examine the experiences of adult children raised
in migrant families in which the father took up employment abroad. Material and methods: The study used the case study method. Data were collected
through narrative problem-focused interviews conducted with five individuals (four
women and one man) from families with a migrant father. Results: Analysis of the empirical material revealed that the presence of other family
members, siblings, and grandparents partially compensated for the absence of the father,
facilitating everyday functioning. The mother also played a key role, whose involvement
was more strongly perceived and appreciated. Children’s understanding of the reasons
for migration had a positive impact on their attitude towards the situation. The father’s
migration also encouraged them to take on responsibility earlier and develop life skills. Conclusions: The results indicate the need to introduce systemic psychological support
for members of these families and preventive measures. The research is also important for
pedagogy, as it shows how the temporary absence of the father affects the emotional and
social development of children and the formation of their identity.
